✦ Author’s Note

from AJ Gabriel

This book is not a fantasy in the way we often think of fantasy.

There are no spells here. No wars. No thrones.

Only memory.
Emotion.
Grief, and healing.
Silence, and the soft courage it takes to break it.

The Archive of the Heart is not a place I discovered.
It’s a place I remembered.

It came to me in pieces: in quiet journals, in dreams I didn’t know how to name, in the invisible weight of stories I’ve carried as a nurse, a daughter, a witness to so many unnamed losses.

This book is for the quiet ones.
The ones who weren’t chosen in fairy tales.
The ones who weren’t loud enough to be heroes.
The ones who survived, not by fighting dragons—but by remembering who they were before the world told them to forget.

This is a work of fiction.
But every page holds something real:
A truth I couldn’t say out loud until now.
A name someone needed to hear again.
A soul waiting to be seen.

I didn’t write this book to escape.
I wrote it to come home.

And if you’re reading this—

maybe you did, too.

With love and light,
AJ Gabriel

Introduction

For the one holding this story now

This book was not written to impress you.

It was written to see you.

To hold the ache you’ve been carrying quietly.
To honor the names you still whisper in your heart.
To remember what the world often asks us to forget:

That grief has its own language.
That memory is sacred.
That staying soft is an act of courage.

In this story, you will meet apprentices—not warriors.
You will walk into silence, not battle.
You will feel the pulse of souls trying to make sense of what they carry.

Sana.
Milo.
Coren.

They do not come to the Archive to become powerful.

They come to become present.

To witness the unspoken.
To carry forgotten stories home.
To become what the world rarely allows:
Tender. Honest. Willing.

If you’ve ever felt invisible, this story is for you.

If you’ve ever stayed when it hurt—this story is yours.

If you’ve ever carried others without knowing how to carry yourself…

May this book feel like a hand on your back.
A candle in a room you forgot how to enter.

You don’t have to be whole to begin this journey.

You just have to be here.

Welcome to the Archive.

It remembers you.

Even now.
