The Shift That Never Ends

The Shift That Never Ends

We walk into rooms with quiet eyes,
measuring pain by the way a breath breaks.
We carry charts in one hand,
hope in the other—
and still find a way to smile
when our own hearts are tired.

We are the ones who wait—
by beeping monitors,
by families in tears,
by doors that lead both in and out of life.

They think we “just take blood pressure.”
But they don’t see us
holding hands during final breaths,
or whispering,
“You’re safe now,”
to someone who hasn’t been in years.

We are nurses.
And today, this is for the ones
who show up anyway—
even when sleep is short,
even when kindness is tested,
even when no one claps anymore.

Happy Nurses Day.
You are not just a profession.
You are the pulse behind every quiet miracle.
